Seattle Housing

More real estate agents.Everything was gravy for people selling houses in the last few years due to large margins of profit for sellers and the greed for easy “houses never lose money” investments for buyers…. You need to embrace them or be left behind.I believe that these high margin sales people will get a bit of a reprieve from online social networking in that they will be able to capitalize on those who are online and use it socially, but not familiar with it enough to find tools toI find it amusing when juvenile mentalities are so commonplace in consumer facing business.

Security Information Management [SIM]

This is no simple task as there is a lot of sales material that will promise anything, but from the presentation of the architecture and real-world benchmarking, a clear image may present itself. Two of the large commercial research firms authored materials were also gathered to assist in this mater, though one of them was shockingly inaccurate, unfamiliar with the history and utility of the tools in practice, and offered some very poor advice in its conclusions. Unfortunately this is all too common in my experience with commercial research, so the wise buyer of capital investment level hardware and software would be best served to spend the time evaluating each architecture, dependancies, and challenges if they are able. That being said, I will begin my presentation: A SIM implementation has the ability to solve a variety of problems at once due to its evolution from a log management platform.

Calendaring without Outlook

Since then, at the time it was Mozilla’s combined email and web client, Thunderbird has done a great job with the internal PKI signed Microsoft encrypted mail (send by some in the consulting companies of which I have been a member) and many other tasks that have given other mailers problems. To solve my problem, the following solution to this calendaring problem can be found with Lightning and Provider.Even though Lightning is still a bit clunky, it is workable for properly formatting Outlook responses. With Provider, you can sync your calendar data with a google calendar…. One thing to keep in mind here is that google calendar is public world facing information, so take some time to think about if this works for the implementation you are considering. If the google calendar information isn’t clear enough, there are many other references that offer more screen captures and details.

Flying geekstyle

There are enough platinum/exectutive/diamond flyers taking up the reduced space in the first class compartment to guarantee that I, without at least moderate elite status, will not be upgraded. What is a nerd to do?I now pick underutilized flights, get a window seat, and sit sideways with my laptop or reading material hogging the middle seat.As you can see, the windows are behind me…. This also reduces the amount of people who have access to snooping on me while I work.Another win.Things I take with me when I travel in this hostile airport-rich environment:One or more laptops (depending on work being performed)Personal media player with cheap noise canceling headphones (I have an old pair of Aiwas that I purchased 8 years ago for $50 from an electronics chain.)

Media Defender antics

TorrentFreak seems to have the most involved and comprehensive tale of what they contain. This is a great example of people who do some things well getting caught doing things that are not their strengths. If you are going to establish an organization that will become a target for, arguably, some of the worlds most skilled and experienced technophiles, you should plan accordingly. That they were ever outed at all is a failure, but things like this (quoted from digg article) show how if you are untrained, ignorant, or sloppy, it can bring down an entire enterprise:The genius employee of MD subscribed to a torrent site using the gmail account he had setup as an email archive as the username and used the same password for the torrent site as he did for the gmail account….  Price and availability must be correct or it will be circumvented by someone with time on their hands that will make money created by those that can not, or will not, purchase what you are selling in the way you choose to sell it.This is the gist of all of the DRM, piracy, and putting-the-gene-back-in-the-bottle problem.

Unreal estate

You (the loan originator) have been paid and are not responsible for it anymore.I started reading about this more closely after seeing some petty whining from real estate agents on Yelp about Redfin…. I wish them the best of luck in their efforts as it is a true David vs Goliath challenge considering the profitability of the industry, the lobbying power of the MLS-running real estate companies, and how vehemently they protect their market. It reminds me a lot about how the established telecommunications companies freaked out over VOIP providers and how they wanted to maintain their artificial profit margin after several generations of technology increased efficiency from the 10 cents per minute levels of yesteryear to the 1 to 2 cent levels previous to the arrival of VOIP.Since trunking systems were already in place, the adoption of VOIP into corporate systems was as simple as getting the bandwidth and quality of service right for the voice data.Perhaps something along the same lines will evolve with MLS.

Apple not interested in corporate customers

The few things are keeping me from being a solutions provider of Apple computer products to business.First is Apple’s inability to inform business channels of their release schedule. I understand that they want to scam the average consumer and maximize consumption independent of a release schedule. For business customers, however, this just isn’t viable.

Playstation 3 and Oblivion

Since I am a huge nerd, I’ve had a Playstation 3 since December of last year.”Sony PlayStation 3 (60GB)” (Sony Computer Entertainment)Sony as a company makes a lot of really dumb decisions. Everyone has already talked to death Blu-ray and how they don’t like it because Sony made it.

BBB complaint: Vonage

Today I opened a complaint with Vonage with the NJ Better Business Bureau.I think it is worthwhile to serve as an example of what can happen in the mad dash to pay off venture investors instead of keeping their eye on the ball.It reads as follows:I was one of the first Vonage adopters…. No one was listening. No one was capable of correcting my problem or interested in addressing Vonage’s breakdown in processing my situation. After two weeks, I began the process of porting my phone numbers to another VOIP telephone provider as I still did not have phone service and would have to wait another 30 days before my numbers were going to work with this new provider that had more competent employees.Eventually the numbers were ported over to my new provider and my phone was ringing again…. I would get phone calls at all hours of the day and night as they repeatedly issued my phone number to customer after customer of theirs.Eventually I had my previous number disconnected to get away from Vonage…. That is a problem for someone other than me at this time.I want a refund on the two months of service where my phone was not working by no fault of my own after Vonage took it upon themselves to break my service and then have no interest in troubleshooting their failure.

Honorable Mention

I was mentioned as a Technical Editor in Curtis Preston’s new edition of Backup and Recovery. Thanks for the free book, Curtis!
