iPhone fails it

I am out of patience with the iPhone. It’s fired.

no MMS. Instead, you get directed to this joke.
no GPS
no tethering without hacking it
no applications until at least Feb ‘08
only EDGE networking

Seriously. How can any phone be released not having MMS? It was the straw that broke my already highly annoyed camel’s [...]

Textella

My friend Ralph Covelli presented on his long time effort of Textella this weekend at Toorcon.

Betrayed by Nokia

I mentioned in an earlier entry about how Nokia recommends upgrading their customers phones to solve security problems in their bluetooth support and other problems.I took it upon myself to go to their webpage for software updates, install the Nokia PC Suite and the Nokia Software Updater, and followed their instructions to upgrade my software. What happened was that it the Nokia software bluescreened Windows XP in the middle of my firmware upgrade of my E61.It looked to be that my phone was now bricked.I was one of the first consumers in the country to get my E61, recommended it to my peers and clients, and it had served me well until now…. Failing to provide a safe way to apply them and then refusing to support it after their own products fail to do what they should is a betrayal to their customers.Since I can not be without a phone, I had to run out and pick up an iPhone as an interim replacement, which I am not happy about at all.

Truecrypt on OSX

I’m tired of waiting for a cross-platform whole disk encryption solution that isn’t garbage and/or highly proprietary. The Truecrypt people have been talking about and promising it for years. It’s been used by lots and lots of alpha-nerds on Windows and Linux.Perhaps these guys that seem like they’re scamming on FD will get it done.

FreeBSD 6.2 rootdisk mirroring

If you’re a little rusty on software raid, as I have been spoiled by hardware raid for some time, good documentation on newer methods can be a little hard to find. For a simple whole root disk mirroring walkthrough, this is a very good guide…. I’m sure you’ve been there before.A novel example of some of the rampant plagiarism in blogs can be seen here, though they do correct the clobbering line to /boot/loader.conf that, for the uninitiated, will clobber (as in erase the contents and replace it with the echoed text) any previous configuration you had there. All I have to do now is order some spare SATA drives for when Bad Things Happen, and I won’t have to think about it for a while besides occasional updates and when I’m actually being productive.Getting more done.

Thunderbird and Google Calendar

As I mentioned earlier, the Lightning and Provider extensions are handy for getting meeting information flowing with non-Microsoft software. My entry was a bit light on screen captures and detail, so if you were having trouble following it, check out this step by step guide.

Seattle Housing

More real estate agents.Everything was gravy for people selling houses in the last few years due to large margins of profit for sellers and the greed for easy “houses never lose money” investments for buyers…. You need to embrace them or be left behind.I believe that these high margin sales people will get a bit of a reprieve from online social networking in that they will be able to capitalize on those who are online and use it socially, but not familiar with it enough to find tools toI find it amusing when juvenile mentalities are so commonplace in consumer facing business.

Security Information Management [SIM]

This is no simple task as there is a lot of sales material that will promise anything, but from the presentation of the architecture and real-world benchmarking, a clear image may present itself. Two of the large commercial research firms authored materials were also gathered to assist in this mater, though one of them was shockingly inaccurate, unfamiliar with the history and utility of the tools in practice, and offered some very poor advice in its conclusions. Unfortunately this is all too common in my experience with commercial research, so the wise buyer of capital investment level hardware and software would be best served to spend the time evaluating each architecture, dependancies, and challenges if they are able. That being said, I will begin my presentation: A SIM implementation has the ability to solve a variety of problems at once due to its evolution from a log management platform.

Calendaring without Outlook

Since then, at the time it was Mozilla’s combined email and web client, Thunderbird has done a great job with the internal PKI signed Microsoft encrypted mail (send by some in the consulting companies of which I have been a member) and many other tasks that have given other mailers problems. To solve my problem, the following solution to this calendaring problem can be found with Lightning and Provider.Even though Lightning is still a bit clunky, it is workable for properly formatting Outlook responses. With Provider, you can sync your calendar data with a google calendar…. One thing to keep in mind here is that google calendar is public world facing information, so take some time to think about if this works for the implementation you are considering. If the google calendar information isn’t clear enough, there are many other references that offer more screen captures and details.
