New Wii games

There are a lot of Wii games out now, and basically none for the ps3. Here are a list of some that I’ve tried and briefly what I’ve thought of them.

“Carnival Games” (Global Star)

Carnival Games is somewhat entertaining and easy for non-gamer-types to pick up. It’s all the fun of the midway (which was never very fun to me) without paying for it. After about an hour of playing it, I was bored and would be unlikely to play it again. There are a lot of things to unlock for the obsessive compulsive gamer, but I don’t see many people bothering.

“Cooking Mama: Cook Off” (Majesco)

This game is fascinating. The mind that put together a game to instill the interest of cooking in children is pure genius. Through the wii controller, you cut, chop, mince, grate, peal, stir, clean fish, arrange for presentation, and other kitchen skills. People who know nothing about cooking will know enough to be a real terror in a real kitchen after playing this game for a while. I’m going to have to try multiplayer someday.

“Alien Syndrome” (Sega of America, Inc.)

I didn’t like the controls in this game much, but perhaps if I played it more, they would grow on me. It is well thought out with a character development and skill system unlike any that I have seen before. In addition to choosing skills and equipment favorites, you can also splice your genes for added strength, agility, and other attributes using alien technology that they monstrous aliens were nice enough to leave around for you. If you recall Smash TV:

“Super Smash TV” (Acclaim)

it’s a bit like that with extra playability and wii mele controls for you to freak out with wildly swing back and forth when being swarmed by aliens after you run out of ammo.

“Fishing Master” (Konami)

I like these silly fishing games. This one is clearly for younger players who have never been actually fishing. It is fun in a very japanese cartoonish way where the fish are subdued with samurai fishing rod moves. The variety of fishing lures and consumable special baits makes it an interesting and somewhat challenging game.

“Pool Party” (Southpeak)

The people who developed this trash will soon never work in the video gaming industry again. I played this game for about 30 seconds before I was annoyed with the controls, horrible interface, and clunky graphics. I was then finished.

“Resident Evil 4″ (Capcom USA)

I have never liked the interface in any of the Resident Evil games. This one is an improvement with the wii controller, but when zombies are tearing into my flesh, I like to be able to move around and shoot them in the face. I never get that with these games, so I end up losing my interest pretty quickly. It is very much an improvement on the last couple (which I hated) and I actually played it for about 10 minutes before quitting. A serious accomplishment for a Resident Evil. If you like the previous ones, you’ll love this one.

“Chicken Shoot” (Destination Software)

This is very much a game for disturbed children whos parents let them watch The Sopranos. There are chickens being shot by thugish mobsters for no reason. If you shoot the right chickens, you can get shotguns and machine-guns to more effectively lay waste to harmless fowl. After a while, they start fighting back by throwing eggs. Why? This game is the product of a disturbed mind.

“Mario Strikers Charged” (Nintendo)

This is one of the best thought out games for the Wii console. It is complicated and variable based on how you structure your team, there is a luck factor in how powerups are used, and it has all the multiplayer abilities that you may want though internet play. It is a little annoying that one has to enter a new friend code for each of these games even if you have already added friends wiis into your address book, but like the pokemon game, you have to do it again with this one as well.

I’m not very good at this one, so feel free to destroy me for your amusement: 034471 565002

“World Championship Poker: All In” (Crave Entertainment)

Boring. Very boring. Maybe I’m just not a poker playing console type. There is, at least, a way to turn up the speed so that the constant computer players jabbering “poker talk” can be skipped, but then you miss the pace of the hand. I’ve found that just hitting the “-” button a lot is skipful enough for me. This is not a game I will play much. Maybe if you are a total poker newbie you may find this game entertaining.

I’m looking forward to playing Metroid. I know it will be a serious time commitment, so I’m waiting until I have some work done and will reward myself afterwards. Many have told me it is as good as Zelda, so I’m sure it will be a blast:

“Metroid Prime 3: Corruption” (Nintendo)
